Bullies have been there since forever but technology has given them a whole new platform. Its very difficult to understand when and how to step in as parents. But here is a guide that might help people to understand what it is.
Cyber bullying is the use of technology to threaten, harass or embarrass another person. Cyber bullying can also happen accidentally. The impersonal nature of texts sent can make it very tough to understand the sender’s tone. And because many kids are reluctant to report being bullied, it is impossible to know how many are actually affected.
Severe, or long term cyber bullying can lead to anxiety and depression. In some rare cases, students have also turned to horrendous options like suicide! This bullying can be considered a crime.
If a child is being emotionally upset, being very secretive of their digital life, avoiding school or group gatherings, wanting to stop using the computer or cellphone, being nervous after receiving a text, then a parent must understand that he might be a cyber bullying victim! Parents can help by talking to the child to make him feel less alone. Take control of the situation by talking to the child’s friends yourself. Because sometimes, friends know more than parents do.
Other measures to try could be-:
Let someone at school take control. If the child is being bullied by someone at school, then bringing it to the notice of the principal might help. But before doing so, let your child know that this is what you plan to do.The child might also feel better by blocking the bully.!
And don’t forget to set a good example. Help your own children understand the benefits and the dark sides of the internet world. Let them know that you are there for them. And once they gain self confidence again, nothing can stop them!
